Abstract
These reports present the results
of a study to determine the concentration of sodium chloride in the
atmosphere under varying weather conditions and at different locations
around Kennedy Space Center (KSC). Sodium choride and other salts in
seawater which exist in the atmosphere as an aerosol are corrosive and
could initiate or accelerate the decay and deteroiration of critical
GSE and flight components. These studies were initiated to measure these
constituents in the atmosphere at various elevations and distances from
the ocean. Aerosol
samples were taken at various times during the course of the study.
Concurrent with each series of aerosol samples, meteorological data
was obtained from the KSC 150 Meter Ground Winds Tower for analysis
of the data.
For additional information, complete copies
of these studies are available as NASA-KSC Report Shuttle Study Task
No. 0031, Addendum I, and Addendum II. Send requests for copies
